Our CharterA small group of people began meeting in the early part of 1999 to determine the interest of forming an organization for humanists in the city of Fort Worth. After several meetings they decided to organize under the auspices of the American Humanist Association.
The Humanists of Fort Worth was granted a chapter charted on
June 3, 1999 by the American Humanist Association (AHA). The organization
originally met at the First Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church in Fort
Worth. A program of renovations to First Jefferson required the group move to
Westside Unitarian Universalist Church where the group continues to meet.
Signers of the charter were: Jim Fogleman, GT Armstrong, Jean Tant, Dennis Burke, BJ Armstrong, Marcia Vernor, Russell Elleven, Iona Burke, Jeff Rodriguez, and Dick Trice. Russell Elleven took the paperwork to the American Humanist Association's conference in Columbus, Ohio and received the charter.
The group is also affiliated with the Council for Secular
Humanism (CSH). Membership of the Humanists of Fort Worth is made up of
individuals from the AHA, CSH, and Unitarian Universalists along with others
with no other formal humanist affiliation.
